GABA Neurotransmitter.
Also known as gamma-aminobutyric acid, GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. What this means is, GABA blocks certain brain signals and communication between neurons and also decreases the activity of the nervous system. ⠀
⠀
One way to think about GABA is as a calming and relaxing effect in the brain. GABA is created by the amino acid glutamate, along with a form of vitamin B6 that acts as a co-factor. ⠀
⠀
Impaired function of GABA has been noted as a potential contributor to anxiety. When we face stress, this influences the levels of GABA in the brain which, then impacts anxiety levels. ⠀
