Thyroid

The thyroid gland regulates the body’s metabolism rate, including temperature, energy levels, hunger and mood. It does this through the production and release of two hormones, T4 and T3. These hormones work at a cellular level to maintain a stable metabolism.

For the thyroid to produce these hormones, the main nutrient needed is iodine, along with selenium, zinc and vitamin B.

When the thyroid is operating as normal, the levels of thyroid hormones in the body are balanced. But, certain lifestyle factors, such as lack of nutrients, stress, inflammation or genetics can cause the thyroid gland to either overproduce its hormones or underproduce them.

At this point, this is where the gland can begin to contribute to poor mental wellbeing.
